Gagging, nausea, heavy stomach…. These unpleasant sensations are triggered to defend your body. That’s what we call nausea. Medication therapy to relieve nausea can in many cases cause some unwanted side effects.
It may then be interesting to turn to more natural solutions. Let’s see how the CBD could become a natural ally for relieve nausea. See our special feature on CBD in dietetics.
Nausea, a body defense mechanism
Nausea is characterized by a feeling of heaviness, unpleasantness in the stomach and disgust. It is a protective reaction of the body to avoid ingesting substances that can be harmful.
It is managed by receptors present both in the digestive tract and in the central nervous system.
Causes and treatments of nausea
The exact causes of nausea are not fully understood and can be multiple. They can be caused during food poisoning, bacterial or viral infections (gastroenteritis, meningitis), pregnancy or excessive alcohol consumption.
Nausea can also be related to motion sickness, depression, migraine, odor, or due to certain medications. Often benign, this feeling of “smeared” stomach can lead to vomiting, a mechanism which occurs after nausea to reject ingested substances.
To relieve nausea, patients are treated with antiemetic drugs containing domperidone, metoclopramide or metopimazine. But the latter have Side effects, including the risk of developing serious heart problems and neurological disorders. They are therefore to be used with great care.
CBD, natural treatment to relieve nausea
Hemp extract with multiple natural benefits
CBD (cannabidiol) is a molecule derived from cannabis. It is part of the family of cannabinoids just like the THC, the other popular compound of hemp. We lavish many natural virtues.
Indeed, it is a powerful anti-inflammatory, an anxiolytic and a soothing. Of many studies are performed to demonstrate its actions and recognize it as a therapeutic treatment to treat certain symptoms and diseases. Unlike THC, it is non-psychotropic, non addictive and totally legal in France. Cannabidiol will not make you not hover and its use is safe. In the case of nausea, it has been shown to be a effective ally.
The relationship between endocannabinoid system and nausea
To establish a link between CBD and nausea, we must first take an interest in the action of endocannabinoid system (DRY). This system is present in our body and helps in particular to regulate sleep, immunity, inflammation, pain and hunger. The SEC is made up of two receptors: the CB1 present in the central nervous system as well as certain organs and the CB2, which works in the peripheral system (immune cells in the brain and spinal cord).
Studies have shown that both of these receptors are present in areas of the brain involved in nausea, such as back vagal complex, the amygdala, the striatum and cortex. This explains their role in nausea or vomiting.
The natural action of CBD on nausea
Following various research, it appears that the cannabidiol acts in different ways to calm nausea. Indeed, its action promotes both the activation of serotonin receptors and the decrease in the secretion of this hormone by the body. It is thanks to this regulation that the CBD helps fight nausea symptom.
On the other hand, CBD, being a cannabinoid, stimulates the CB2 receptors of the peripheral system and will thus allow the regulation of the antiemetic system. In addition, cannabidiol regulates anandamides, endogenous cannabinoid neurotransmitters with limited lifespan, responsible for the antiemetic effects of CB1 receptors.
The use of CBD will thus help to preserve anandamides in the endocannabinoid system and relieve nausea and vomiting.
