Encouraging studies on the use of CBD in certain forms of epilepsy

Three large studies, including two for infantile forms, have been carried out in recent years. They try to highlight the benefits of this hemp extract for treating epilepsy.

The first was conducted by Dr Devinsky, in 2017, in children suffering from a rare and severe form: Dravet syndrome. Using a controlled oil (Epidyolex) whose CBD concentration is 10%, crises have dropped by 50% for 43% of patients tested (versus 27% placed on placebo).

The second study, carried out on children with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, was also very encouraging. Cannabidiol helped decrease seizures by 42%. The third study, carried out by the Dr. Szaflarski, attempted to assess the efficacy and tolerance of cannabidiol in patients, both children and adults, resistant to conventional treatments.

This research shows that CBD halves seizures. However, not having a “placebo group”, the results are not as relevant as the two previous trials. This clinical research nonetheless provides proof of the effectiveness of a treatment with CBD oil. In particular, on the following epileptic forms: Dravet syndrome, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and those drug-resistant.

Are there any risks of side effects with CBD?

During these different studies, some mild side effects appeared (especially diarrhea and drowsiness).

Be aware that CBD usually does not pose any risk to its users. However, do not take or do not give your child cannabidiol without first consulting your doctor.

This is because there may be an interaction with molecules present in other drugs. This is the case, for example, of clobazam which causes an increase in the active concentration of the drug or valproic acid which causes alteration of liver enzymes.

Consumption of cannabidiol as part of epilepsy treatment

Epidyolex is the only drug with cannabidiol as an active substance. Its use is very supervised, monitored and subject to medical prescription.

On the other hand, non-drug use of CBD may be possible. Notably in the form of oil, favoring the sublingual route for a very fast action (between 5 and 15 minutes). We advise you to adjust the dose according to the reactions observed and the needs. feel free to consult a doctor beforehand to make sure you can consume it.

In addition, pay attention to the quality of the cannabidiol used. Make sure it is from organic farming and does not contain no trace of toxicity (pesticide, traces of heavy metals, etc.) or THC.

Thanks to its natural virtues, CBD also seems to be very promising in the relief from fibromyalgia.
